IIHF World Championship | Day 2 | April 30th, 2011

Just a short update for you guys who are stuck safely and soundly in the Playoffs.

[Finland-Denmark] 5-1. Expected, hoped for and gotten after last year's opening game upset, where the Finns for some reason lost 4-1 to Denmark.

[USA-Austria] 5-1. This year the Germans upset the Russians in the opening game, by beating them 2-0. Last year the USA suffered a similar fate when the Germans unexpectedly beat the USA 2-1 in OT. Ha, Team USA was having none of it this year facing Austria and smoothly won this one 5-1.

[Czech Republic-Latvia] 4-2. Very much expected. Havlat and Elias scored two of the Czech goals. It was not pretty and apparently the Czechs were a bit surprised that the Latvians managed to get into the game.

[Norway-Sweden] 5-4 SO win. Wow. I did not know this, but since 1950 - when they first met - Norway never won a game and managed to tie a game only once when playing against Sweden. So this was a pretty historical occurence! Mark it in your hockey trivia book ;)

Did not manage to catch any of the games myself, but might tomorrow! Hopefully some interesting games!

Playoffs Tidbit | Shark Bites Wing | April 30th, 2011

Normally I do not like any type of costume set up during sports games. Not even mascots! It's not Halloween, it's not a costume party, it's a sports game!!

But even I must admit this is awesome lol

Playoffs Daily | SF Game 1 | April 30th, 2011

Last night we had Game 1 of the Semi-Finals for the Caps vs Bolts and Preds vs Wings. The good news is I finally caught some live Playoffs action again. The bad news is that I fell asleep during the second period of the Caps game lol.

[Bolts-Caps]  4-2. Bolts lead series 1-0. Well, I managed to watch some of it at least. It was enjoyable enough with two goals by the Caps and one by the Bolts. Only one of the Caps' goals got denied, so into first intermission the score was 1-1. I struggled through intermission and managed to watch a bit of the second period, even saw Eric Fehr score to really make it 2-1. All was good. But when I woke up the table had been turned and the Bolts had won. Good on them, but I really want the Caps to move on. Ovi made me laugh a bit during his post-game interview. He looked a bit down and said: "We didn't play our game. We, I think, played too cute (!!) and we take lots of penalties. And that cost us. Again, you know, it is over and we have to get ready for the next game." Cute!

[Red Wings-Sharks] 1-2. Sharks lead series 1-0. I woke up to see the Wings lead 1-0. Convinced they would win it, I went back to sleeping, but I just found out they lost. Coach Babcock said it all. He thought the Sharks were better and that they skated very well. He then went on to say that he thought the first period would be their worst, but alas, it was not the case. The Sharks dominated, the Wings took way too many penalties and as the coach put it: "You can't be in the penalty box and expect to survive." Very honest analysis, like it. But the way he was talking you would think nothing went right ;) ... it did take the Sharks an OT goal to win! Well hey, the Wings will reclaim their awesomeness in the next game.

And I need to spend some time on the topic of Sidney Crosby. I just came across an article on NHL.com and I was sad to read that he has had a bit of a setback and that it is unclear when he will return. He hopes to be back for the next season. Listen, Sid was for a long time my favourite guy to hate, but eversince he had the concussion and is struggling so hard to get back, I just cannot hate him. I feel sorry for him and I genuinly wish he will return quickly. We can list his annoying traits but in the end he is an amazing hockey player and I want to see him do his thing again. I can go back to hating on him when he gets back :)

IIHF World Championship | Team Canada & USA News | April 29th, 2011

Yaps, for some guys the Playoffs are over but there is still some hockey left for some as they get added to the rosters for Team Canada and Team USA.

Team Canada added LA King Jonathan Bernier and Marc-André Gragnani of the Sabres.  Oh, Penguin James Neal as well! Expect them to join the team in the next few days.

Team USA added Paul Gaustad of the Sabres. Yeah some other guy too, but he plays in the OHL and the ignorant me has no clue who is anyways ;)

IIHF World Championship | Day 1 | April 29th, 2011

Do not expect the same addiction-induced scriblings for the World Championship. It is fun enough, but nothing can trump the Playoffs! But I will be watching as much games as I can and I will share my little musings with you ;)

Today four games were played. I managed to watch Belarus vs Canada. Eberle scored twice and Tavares and Skinner got a goal each. Stepanov scored for Belarus. Dion was a beast, getting in all sorts of hits, not all legal so he spent a fair amount of time in the penalty box, but all is good! And Reimer was his cool awesome self. The guys continues to make me proud. Anyways, that was a 4-1 win and great start. Oh, I have to say that another Leafie did great too. Grabovski played a good game for Belarus :)

I must admit that I do not always know which country is most likely to win a game. I think that Switzerland's 1-0 win over France is to be expected, and I am quite positive that Slovakian hockey is more evolved than Slovenia's so the 3-1 win for Slovakia sounds plausible. But hell! Who would have expected Russia to get beaten by Germany with a 2-0 game? Shutout too! Not me! Not even my German buddy Sven and he knows German hockey like no one else I am sure. I am a lifelong Russia fan, since the USSR times, so this is not a very pleasing result. But I can certainly appreciate the epic effort shown by the German team. Gut gemacht, Jungs! :D

Playoffs Daily | SF Game 1 | April 29th, 2011

Just one game! Just one! That's tough to deal with after all the hecticism of the first round ;)

[Preds-Nucks] 0-1. Nucks lead series 1-0. Another good start for them. And from what I have read, Rinne was awesome and saved the Preds a great number of times. Then again, Luongo did much the same on the other side. A good goalie game!

Thankfully we have two games tomorrow and not just the one. I am looking forward to the Caps-Bolts series! I have the feeling we will be entertained :)

IIHF World Championship | When?! Where?! | April 28th, 2011

We might be in full-on Stanley Cup mode, but lets not forget some of our favourite NHL players will be fighting for their country's honour at the IIHF World Championship in Bratislava & Kosice in Slovakia. If I lived any closer to Slovakia I would drive up there. And it starts tomorrow! From April 29th to May 15th we will get to see many exciting games I am sure! Now if only Dutch TV would pay attention to it. I suppose I will be streamhunting again *sighs*

And hey, not all my Leafies are playing golf either! Some have been called up to join Team Canada or Team USA, so there! Mike Komisarek & Mike Brown have been added to the Team USA roster (as well as Jake Gardiner of the Marlies!). Team Canada has added James Reimer, Dion Phaneuf (A) & Luke Schenn to the roster.

And a special mention for  Rick Nash  ... he has been named Captain for Team Canada!

If bored I might check the other teams and see which of our European faves are playing for their respective countries.

My Whimsical Playoffs Predictions - New & Improved

EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS & FINALS
[Caps vs Bolts]
I had Caps versus Pens, but alas, the Pens got booted out. I like this match-up. I think we might be in for a few good games. But the Caps will get this one. 4-2 Caps. {edit: as I posted this, some huge thunder bolts lit up the sky, maybe I am wrong ...}

[Flyers vs Bruins]
I predicted this match-up, so no changes here. In my original predictions I said Sergei Bobrovksy would settle in nicely and beat Thomas. Since then we have seen Leighton and Boosh in net. We have seen Sergei in the press box. I am glad that mistake has been corrected. So Leights is apparently injured, I hope he stays the hell away from our goal. He has no business there. I can live with Boosh being the starter and I am happy Sergei is once again on the bench. Whew. With that out of the way, let me see. It will be the most physical series. Both teams have a similar style and I think that at the end of the series someone should post a video with all the hits. It might make a fine movie! Flyers are on a roll now I think and it will not be easy, but my guys will win 4-2.

[Caps vs Flyers]
Caps, I love you guys, but my Flyers will sail right past you. I just do not want to say 4-2 again. I think I will consult The Coins. Well, at least they agree with me the Flyers will win, but it will take a game more: 4-3 Flyers.

WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMI-FINALS & FINALS
[Nucks vs Preds]
Had the Ducks here first. But the Preds ate my Duckling and are now in the Semi-Finals. I do not like it much. Yeah, I think the Nucks will make it. I just honestly do not think the Preds are a match for these guys. But as the Nucks like to make things tough on themselves I am going to say they are headed for another seven game series. 4-3 Nucks. No, I just cannot believe it. Not against the Preds. 4-2 Nucks.

[Sharks vs Red Wings]
Got this one right. Still no contest. Red Wings march through and quite easily too with lots of Datsyukian dekes. 4-1 Wings.

[Nucks vs Red Wings]
Ha! And now the Playoffs really are over for the Nucks. They are tired and the Wings will beat them in five games! Yeah! 4-1 Wings.

STANLEY CUP FINALS
[Flyers vs Red Wings]
My dream comes true. My Flyboys totally dominate and even Datsyuk cannot save the Wings. But good effort there! 4-2 FLYERS!!

Playoffs 2011 | Witchcrafting Revisited - Post QF | April 28th, 2011

I had much fun writing up my Playoffs predictions. It is time to see how I did. I do not think I had any of the series scores correct, but at least I got some wins right :D

EASTERN CONFERENCE
[Series A - Caps vs Rangers] - Hey, I got one right!!
My prediction: 4-1 Caps
Reality: 4-1 Caps

[Series B - Flyers vs Sabres] - Hahah, the 4-0 was one of my 'wishful thinking' predictions. I knew it would not happen, because the Sabres were excellent post-ASG. And I really paid close attention to them as my Leafies were trying to get to the final eight. But I truly wished my Flyers would obliterate them. But they chose to make it tough on themselves and go for a Game 7 ;) ... also, I already had no love at all for the Sabres, but their constant whining has made me utterly hate them, and Ryan Miller in particular.
My prediction: 4-0 Flyers
Reality: 4-3 Flyers

[Series C - Bruins vs Habs] - This was an intense one. Whew, glad the Bruins did it! The HABS GET TO GO HOOOOOME! And they were dispatched of quickly enough to be able to join my Leafies on the golf course. Hah. Not such a great Summer now eh?
My prediction: 4-1 Bruins
Reality: 4-3 Bruins

[Series D - Pens vs Bolts] - I was sure the Pens would come through. The Bolts were alright in regular season, but hardly impressive, whereas the Pens had a tough time without Sid & Malkin, yet still performed great. Hahah. When all is said and done, awesome that the Bolts got rid off the Pens :D
My prediction: 4-2 Pens
Reality: 4-3 Bolts

WESTERN CONFERENCE
[Series E - Nucks vs Blackhawks] - I honestly do not like the Hawks at all. Nucks I am very neutral about. So I wanted the Hawks out 4-0. Imagine my chagrin when the Nucks failed to capitalise on a 3-0 series lead and let the Hawks come back. Yuck, Nucks instantly lauded as potential winners. Oh well ...
My prediction: 4-0 Nucks
Reality: 4-3 Nucks

[Series F - Sharks vs Kings] - Hahah. Since I did not care about this match-up at all, I actually flipped coins and they were almost on the money - pun intended! ;) And I must say that whilst watching these guys plays I slowly got to like them a bit more. It was an interesting series in the end.
My prediction - or rather, The Coins prediction: 4-1 Sharks
Reality: 4-2 Sharks

[Series G - Red Wings vs Yotes] - The Red Wings are my favourite Western team and I think they are awesome, but even I did not expect them to sweeeeeeeep this series. Poor Yotes!
My prediction: 4-2 Wings
Reality: 4-0 Wings

[Series H - Ducks vs Preds] - Hmm, poor Ducklings. But the Preds got their first ever Round 1 win, so at least some history was made :)
My prediction: 4-2 Ducks
Reality: 4-2 Preds

The result:
I called 6 of 8 series winners correctly.
But only got one series result right: the 4-1 Caps win.

Actually I am a bit impressed with my Whimsical Playoffs Predictions :D ... did not think I would call much right at all! I like it so much that based on the series outcome I will redo my Semi-Finals predictions and post those in a bit!

Playoffs Tidbit | Ryan Miller & His Concussion | April 28th, 2011

OK I just need to vent a bit. Just came across an article on NHL in which Ryan Miller admits that the injury that kept him off the ice in the regular season was a concussion. Now I do not wish a concussion upon anyone, not even on my new favourite guy to hate. So Mr. Miller, I am sad to hear that was the reason for your time away. And I hope you will not suffer any negative effects of it in the future!

But jeez, after all the silence, why does he feel the need to come out with this news now? Looking for some pitty points after his whiny freak behaviour during the series versus the Flyers? Attention-seeking? I wish he could have just gone and enjoyed the start of his Summer.

Playoffs Daily | Game 7 | April 28th, 2011

I have missed another great hockey night. Almost weekend so I am hanging in there till my next live action hockey fix. Watched the Flyers game last night. It was amazing! But lets see what happened last night.

[Bruins-Habs] 4-3. Bruins win the series. Splendid!! Happy golfing Habs! But the Bruins sure gave themselves a heart attack by allowing that annoying Subban to score with just two minutes of regulation time to go. So yes, Nathan Horton would be the 1st star for saving the Bruins' asses in OT ... well done guys! Well, my Flyers will face the Bruins in the next round. I think we are up for an interesting series. Of course my guys will smother the Bruins ;)

[Bolts-Pens] 1-0. Bolts win the series. Well talk about embarrassing!! Pens lose on home ice. But I really thought the Pens would win this series. The Bolts had a good season, but not a particularly sparkly one, while the Pens showed some true dedication by doing very well without Sid and Malkin. So prediction-wise this is a setback, but on an emotial level: WHOOOOO GO HOME PENS! Great work Bolts, glad to see them in the next rounds. Versus the Caps. Well, no contest there if you ask me, Caps will clinch the series.

OK, now that the first round is over I will have to revisit my predictions and bring out The Coins to redo them. Will post that article later today. And should I feel bored I might do a little analysis of the old ones lol

Onto the next round! Today the Nucks are back, facing the Preds. Wonder what that historic first round win will do for the Preds!

Playoffs Tidbit | Crazy Carcillo | April 27th, 2011

Today some extra special care for my favourite bad boy at the Flyers. Carcillo! He looks like the NHL's Dennis the Menace, you just know he is up to something naughty. And when the time has come, you will still be a bit surprised! Am I just imagining things or do at least half of my fellow Flyers fans hate him? It is crazy. Some say he is not fighting enough, others accuse him of being a lousy hockey player. Well, I do not care. Under the tutelage of Lavi he has become quite a fascinating player. The boyish rascal on ice, sometimes just a bit of an unguided projectile, but more and more a smart-playing teammate. And to me he is performing marvelously in the Playoffs.

So here a favourite moment. He scores a cool goal by chipping in his own rebound. As if that is not enough, he skates along the Sabres bench and does some taunting by the looks of it. If any of you happened to sit near the bench and heard what he said, please comment lol

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 6 & 7 | April 27th, 2011

wh000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Sorry for the long yell, but I am HAPPY! My Flyers went back to old form and dominated Game 7 and have closed the series to their advantage!

[Bruins-Habs] 1-2. Series tied. Dammit. But I am positive the Bruins will win the series!

[Sabres-Flyers] 5-2. Flyers win series! YEAH! We slashed the Sabres ;) I woke up some time during the night. I cranked up the NHL applet and saw we were leading 2-0. I knew we would win so I continued my sleep quite blissfully lol ... so waking up and seeing a good old 5-2 made my day! Must hunt it down for watching because once again ESPN America snubbed my Flyers. I am sending in a complaint :p - have however watched the highlights and those were some awesome goals by our guys. Leino's was my fave. And hahah, Carcillo, that was pretty great too :)

[Blackhawks-Nucks] 1-2. My wish has been granted. The Nucks have ousted the Hawks. Splendid! And by the looks of it it was a memorable game. I have DVR-ed it so will be watching later. But the tweets were of the charts :)

Well, today we have the final two QF games. I hope the Bruins and the Pens win their series. But hell, if the Bolts move to the next round I will not be complaining! :D

Might share a few Playoffs Tidbits, but for now I am just elated my guys went through and as per usual I will leave the more in-depth analysis to those who actually know what they are talking about lol

And here my crazy predictions in full!
My Whimsical Playoffs Predictions

I will be posting new ones after the QFs have been completed.

Twitter Time #3 | Baseball & Burgers | April 26th, 2011

Hi buddies. Another fun tweet-chat with some of my fave players.

Date: April 23rd, 2011
Topic: Baseball & Burgers
Usual Suspects: Joffrey Lupul, Colby Armstrong, Christian Hanson, Bobby Ryan

Joffrey Lupul Just left the Angels game.. My seats were no TD Comfort Zone's... !

Colby Armstrong @ Lupul buddy are u serious. They didn't have a rubber pad for u to sit on in ur seat.

Christian Hanson "@ Lupul: Just left the Angels game.. My seats were no TD Comfort Zone's... !"

Colby Armstrong @ Christian Hanson . Save that for tomorrow night

Bobby Ryan @ Ryan Whitney Hahahaha. That will never happen man. Congrats on wiring loops yesterday.

Joffrey Lupul @ Bobby Ryan ur taking Whits side? Welcome to baby.. FYI they didn't show the DUX score once at the Angels game.

Bobby Ryan @ Lupul I call it like I see it. You know I have your back. Cassidys date soon?

Joffrey Lupul @ Bobby Ryan I can't stay mad at you w/ those dangles! Siiick bro. Burgers on me when the time comes...

That would be a fun evening out. Eating burgers with these guys!

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 6 | April 26th, 2011

Just two games last night. Too late for me to watch live, but as per usual I have recorded both games and I will be watching them when I get home. For now I just go with what I know based on the recaps and reviews.

[Pens-Bolts] 2-4. Series tied at 3-3. Whoa, another tighter than expected series. Although both teams are not surprised at all. Apparently both teams knew it was going to take seven games and perhaps a triple OT to settle the winner of this series. That is what Malone said anyways. Prediction-wise I would like to see the Pens win, but emotionally speaking: WAY TO GO BOLTS! lol

[Sharks-LA Kings]: 4-3. Sharks win series 4-2. Ha. For this series' prediction I literally flipped coins, because I just had no idea and frankly, did not care much either. The Coins predicted the Sharks would win the series 4-1. So The Coins were not perfect in their prediction, but they got the winning team right. I will be redoing my predictions after the first round, and might use The Coins :D

Some other musings ...
- Tonight my Flyers play their Game 7 and I feel very confident about this one. I just know they can do it
- Ha, according to a Facebook buddy, Leights was not at practice yesterday, Sergei was. Sounds like good news to me and I hope to see Sergei on the bench for Game 7
- I was psyched when the Steegster moved from my Leafs to my Flyers ... I thought he would fit in better with the Flyers. But after a while this feeling that I was wrong crept up on me. Until Game 6. He worked hard and looked pretty awesome. Typical Playoffs guy? Or did things finally click?

Playoffs Tidbit | Ryan Miller Whiiiiiiiiiines | April 25th, 2011

Currently there is only one player out there that gets my blood boiling. Ryan Miller. The new devil incarnate. Today he officially replaced Sid on my 'hate-list'. Actually, compared to Ryan, I *love* Sid.

I finally had some time to catch up on post-game interviews. So good to have Prongs back, I like his post-game vids. But Ryan. What a sniveling dog. Let me quote:

"If Mike Richards thinks we're getting away with murder, I don't know what he just got away with. Mass-murder? {unintelligible} are we stepping up a notch?"

Really? Did he just compare Richie to a mass-murderer? Wow. And his face, almost epic, if it were not so ugly and scary. Those shifty eyes make him look rather dilusional.

Whiny Freak!

Playoffs Tidbit | Ville Leino Scoooooores | April 25th, 2011

Now I am not going to glorify this goal, it is not the prettiest goal ever. It was hard, dirty work. But it worked. And I have no idea what happened, but this is the goal that had me raise my arms and yell before the puck even went IN! Ville Leino, along with Meszaros, my fave Flyer!

For future reference
Date: April 24th
Game: Stanley Cup QF - Game 6 - Flyers-Sabres
What: Ville scoring in OT giving us yet another day in the Stanley Cup

Twitter Time #2 | More Yoga & Taunting | April 25th, 2011

You can tell for some guys the season is over. Plenty of tweeting going on. Today sharing a conversation that went occured on April 22nd, 2011. These guys really love their yoga apparently. Lupul the other day, now Mike Lashoff as well. His yoga tweet got Zigomanis, Army and Christian Hanson involved. Admittedly not as funny as my first Twitter-related post, but it has its moment ;)

Matt Lashoff Bike ride then yoga

*chuckle*

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 6 | April 25th, 2011

So much was on the line for Flyers. And boy were we in for yet another wild ride. Let me get the scores out of the way first. And then I will bother you with some details of the Flyers game and prepare for some ranting too ;)

[Flyers-Sabres] 5-4. Series tied at 3-3. Game 7 coming up. My nerves are shattered.
[Ducks-Preds] 2-4. Preds win series 4-2. *sigh* I was hoping the Ducklets would win the series. I like their style. Who does not like Bobby Ryan? I watched the first two periods before I had to give in and go to sleep and it was an up & down game. I was not convinced the Ducks could win this, but the Preds were not very inspiring either. It was 2-2 as I called it the day and hoped for the best. Oh well, congrats to the Preds for reaching the Semi Finals for the first time ever. And congrats to my buddy Sven for predicting this one correctly!
[Nucks-Blackhawks] 3-4. Series tied at 3-3. Another OT game. Well, who knew this series would go to a Game 7? Like I said to a buddy yesterday: The Nucks should be able to win this one {game 6} and the series, but if they do  not, all bets are off. Have to laugh at the Nucks for letting things slip, but I really really do not like the Hawks.

Back to my Flyers. Still at my parents' place, ESPN America out of reach ...I thought I would not be watching the game. But I could not resist so I went for a bit of stream hunting. Not a fan of it, but just had to see the game. And I am glad I watched. It was tough to watch, because again the Sabres scored very early in the game and the stats show this is not good for the Flyers. They added insult to injury by scoring again too. Danny made it 2-1 however and kept us in the game. Here I thought we would get momentum and push for more, but instead the Sabres fought back. My guys successfully killed a power play (with both Prongs and Mesz in the penalty box), only to get scored on a few seconds later by Vanek. 3-1. And at this point I got really worried and I vented much of my dismay regarding the goalie situation.

{start short rant}

In short: Leights should never have been called up. I can see what Lavi tried to do there, but I am sure this lack of confidence had a negative effect on both Sergei and Boosh. And Sergei should not have been discarded so easily at all. So  maybe he did not play his best game there in game two, but he is known to recover quickly from bad games and I am sure he would have been back to strength the next game. Leights is nothing more than a decent AHL goalie and he will never improve. So when I read a tweet that Laviolette would start Boosh for game 7 I was like "No shit, Captain Obvious?" ... Lavi's next step should be to send Leights back to the Phantoms and actually hope that some idiot team will pick him up off waivers so we never have to see him near our goal again. And Sergei should be back on the bench. If you see it differently, please make your case in the comments :D

{end short rant}

Back to the game. 3-1 made me very depressed, so JVR's goal was like a huge gift and definitely lifted my spirits again and my belief was thorougly restored when a while later Danny scored to tie the game at 3-3. Which is why the next goal by the Sabres was so annoying. It turned me into a nervous wreck again. I kept hoping and hoping though and was very happy when our Captain Gravity, Harts, scored!! Thanks Z for making it happen! In the final minutes of regulation we had a couple of big shots but the minutes turned to seconds and before we knew it we found ourselves in OT again. The Hockey Gods are not always kind to us in OT. Remember the previous game? I was literally on the edge of my seat though and I stopped breathing entirely I think. Stress levels were enormous! And then I saw Leino head for the goal and I do not know if I had an epiphany or anything but I raised my arms and went for a yell even before he actually scored. Weird? I know!

As I am preparing this article for posting tomorrow morning, I am still feeling the tension and I am munching chocolate easter eggs to replenish some of the energy that game took out of me lol ... but it still hard to stomach the four soft goals our goalies let in.

Oh, I completely failed to mention that Prongs was back! I suppose he was not well enough for an all-out game, he logged about 4 minutes. But I love the guy and was happy to have the big oaf back! If nothing else his presence must have boosted team morale! And onto Game 7.

Playoffs Tidbit | Bobby Ryan's Awesomeness | April 24th, 2011

I am adding this one to my blog. Not because I think I am bringing you breaking news or anything, but because I want to keep this on file for myself too ;)

Unless you live under a rock, I am sure you have seen this one. ENJOY ONCE AGAIN!

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 5 | April 24th, 2011

Guys, Summer has arrived early in the Netherlands! Easter Weekend is proving to be perfect weather-wise and my weekend could have been even more perfect if I could get my hockey fix! I am however staying at my parents' place and they do not have ESPN America. Which makes sense because they do not care about American Sports at all ;) ... so instead of watching a few fun games last night, I had to follow the games through the NHL BlackBerry applet. But that is OK, at least I knew what was going on and I have DVR'ed all the games ESPN aired yesterday for future viewing. So what happened last night?

[Bolts-Pens] 8-2. Pens still lead series 3-2. So I could not watch this game, but watching the score go up and up and up for the Bolts on the NHL BlackBerry applet was wild enough. At 5-0 I thought OK, good going Bolts. At 7-0 I started to feel sorry for the Pens. Can you believe it? For my predictions I still need the Pens to win, but cannot help feeling joy seeing them lose to the Bolts like this ;)

[Rangers-Caps] 1-3. Caps clinch series win with an excellent 4-1 result. Caps did what they had to do and rather deftly disposed of the Rags. Feel like I can stop calling them Rangers ;) Only glitch: why did the Caps allow a goal in the final seconds? By the way, I just impressed myself. I predicted a 4-1 Caps series win lol ... at least got one right in terms of numbers ;) ... Oh yeah. BYE BYE RAGS! Hahah, glad you are gone!

[Habs-Bruins] 1-2. Bruins now lead series 3-2. Timmmeeeeeeh! The Vezina Trophy is yours buddy! I have yet to see the game and believe me, I am happy it is waiting for me on my DVR. But the NHL report, the tweets and the FB posts all point in one direction: one hell of a memorable game! Will probably add an {edit} once I have seen it. I love a good hockey game (ok, who does not?) and even more so if it leads to a Habs defeat ;)

[Kings-Sharks] 3-1. Sharks lead series 3-2. OK, The Coins were predicting this one perfectly till this game. The predicted 4-1 is out of the window now, but The Coins are still in the running for predicting the series winner and if they get that right I might use the coins to redo my Semi Finals predictions ;)

Tonight my Flyers are playing to stay in the running. And the Ducklings are in the same situation. The Nucks. Hmm. What do you guys think? Will they pick up speed again, or will they let the Hawks smother them and tie the series?

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 5 | April 23rd, 2011

A bit late with this daily update. But it was one of those busy Saturdays. I am still reeling a bit from last night's developments. And here I thought just having two games would be boring. But it started off exciting enough, as ESPN decided to show the Flyers game now that the Red Wings did not need their game 5. Lets have the overview first:

[Sabres-Flyers] 4-3. Sabres lead series 3-2. *mumbles, mostly expletives*
[Preds-Ducks] 4-3. Preds lead series 3-2. Hmm another OT loss. The Ducklings sure know how to keep things interesting.

So how did I feel about the Flyers game? It was up and down for me. Obviously the first period was horrible. Boosh looked like a scared little schoolgirl! Allowing soft goals. Somewhere around the 15 minute mark I went to the kitchen and washed some dishes rather than just putting them in the dishwasher and return quickly to continue watching the game. Chores over Hockey *shakes head* ... Upside is that missed I the Sabres' third goal. And oh, Boosh had been replaced by Leights ... wtf? lol

But things definitely got better in the second period. JVR kept us in the game by scoring a marvelous goal. And Mesz. What can I say, there is a reason that he is my fave Flyer along with Leino ... awesome D-guy with an ability to score some big goals. And I am glad Danny got his goal, a great way to equalise the game.

The energy and the dedication in the 2nd and 3rd period showed me they definitely have it in them and I loved watching them. Now, it was getting close to 4am for me at the end of the third period. And I did my best but eventually sleep overtook and I fell asleep on the sofa lol ... so I missed a bit of the 3rd as well as the OT, but I am feeling more positive about my guys than a few games ago. Mistakes were made and the loss could have been avoided, but such is life. Time to move on and have a better next game!

And that Miller guy. His beady eyes make me feel uncomfortable. And did you see him take down Brière? And he got away with it too. Man, that is annoying. Miller has gone from someone who annoys me to someone who has just replaced Sid on my hatelists. From now on nothing but love for Sid :p

Anyways, this post is so late that by now the Pens have lost their game vs the Bolts and quite impressively too ;) The Caps have taken a 2-0 lead half-way through their game vs the Rangers. More about both games in tomorrow's update :)

Playoffs Tidbit | QF Game 5 | Richie Getting Ready | April 23rd, 2011

That is a bit of a shame ... just seconds into the game ... Boosh just gave up a soft one.

But here a pic of our Captain getting ready for the game. All laughs. Hope he (and us) will still be smiling after this game ...

Errrrrr and even before I get the chance to post this, the Sabres score a second soft goal. How embarrassing lol ... so how much longer till Leights replaces Boosh?

Come on guys I know you can do it, NOW DO IT!

Twitter Time #1 | Hockey Yoga Boys

It is not a secret that a lot of NHL players love to tweet. And of course I follow a bunch of them. Tweeting Leafs & Flyers of course, but some others as well. Last night a fun tweet-convo ensued between Lupul, Ryan Whitney, Colby Armstrong and even BizNasty aka Paul Bissonnette chimed in (and got ignored in the process). I like to see this type of banter ...

OK, it started of with Lups looking for a yoga place and then it became a tweet-taunt lol

Joffrey Lupul Where's the best place in Newport Beach for yoga? Feeling like getting my stretch on..

Joffrey Lupul And absolutely NO Bikram! I did that once last summer and I think I'm still dehydrated. I'm from Canada and I don't do anything over 100 deg

Ryan Whitney I did bikram last night. I'm still in bed.

Joffrey Lupul but I'm in peak physical condition and ur Ryan Un-fit-ney.

Ryan Whitney my grandmother has a stronger back than you

Colby Armstrong hahaha unfitney that's solid lups. They are making me change my name to whitney so that works on me also hahaha

Joffrey Lupul  these guys were saying they have stronger ankles than you...

Ryan Whitney your the only 28 year to be traded more me.

Colby Armstrong hahaha oh my god. Pigeon!! Come on whit u gotta have something for lups

Paul Bissonnette whens our t time. Too soon? {ed. *none of the guys reacted to that lol*}

Joffrey Lupul Ha I'm only 27 too dick. How's the view from Mama Whitneys couch in South Boston??

Ryan Whitney why are you hanging out at Getzlaf's house ?

Joffrey Lupul Well that spiced up my afternoon a bit.. I'm off to the gym. I miss ripping on Whit. Ciao

Ryan Whitney when did they rename Cassidys "the gym"? Bye buddy.

LOL ... I had a laugh or maybe you just had to be there :D

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 4 & 5 | April 22nd, 2011

Hmm ... *frowns* ... what are the Nucks up to? Not that I care for the Nucks, but I do hate the Hawks so I want them out. I do not want them to think they might actually still win this series. The Nucks are allowed to choke, but they need to wait for the Semi Finals!

[Bruins-Habs] 5-4. Series tied at 2-2. Thanks Bruins for believing it. And thanks for the intensity and some interesting moments. Yeah you know what I am talking about. I will add a picture of course ;)
[Blackhawks-Nucks] 5-0. Nucks still lead series 3-2. All is well still. But a 5-0 shut-out is not very inspiring. Well it might inspire the Hawks, but I certainly hope not.
[Sharks-Kings] 6-3. Sharks lead series 3-1. So far The Coins who helped me predict this particular series' outcome are on the money *hahah pun intended, I know it is bad lol* Never paid much attention to either team, but have seen a few of their games now and I must admit they do look good on the ice.

OK, with my short overview out of the way, time for some hockey fun. Ference of the Bruins first:

Oh yes. Ference flipped off the entire Bell Centre. He claims he did not, his teammates claim he did not and never would do such a thing. Equipment malfunction has been brought up as an excuse too. Everyone is 'shocked' and apologetic. I understand that. They can hardly go about telling everyone that "Yeah, Ference gave them the bird." It would be a public relations fiasco! And Ference himself seemed so suitably shocked at his own behaviour that I am willing to accept he did not mean to do it lol ... Having said all that:

Thanks Ference for doing what everyone else playing the Habs and facing their horrible fans would like to do.

And the next one is just fun and very comforting. A stumbling Tim Thomas (courtesy of NHL.com). It is cute!

Tumbling Tim

Playoffs Tidbit | Facial Hair Creepiness | Ryan Miller

Whoa, OK, so Miller always has some kind of facial fluff going, but usually I am not confronted by it as it is safely hidden behind his goalie mask. He is a bit more centre stage now, what with singlehandedly keeping the Sabres going and all. So I was watching last night's post-game interview and was totally distracted by his 'stache. It is not appealing at all ...

Feel free to share who you think is currently sporting the worst example of Playoffs Facial Hair :D

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 4 | April 21st, 2011

I could not contain my need to find out how last night's games went, so as I was headed for work, stuck in heavy traffic, I was reading tweets on my BlackBerry. And as I was scrolling I saw good news for the Caps, good news for the Pens fans, good news for the Ducklings and I thought "Hey, this is looking good!" and then I came upon the Flyers result and no. A 1-0 shutout is not what I was hoping for at all. Not at all. And it is also a bit of a lame loss. You know things are not going the way they should when you get your happy hockey fix from other teams. Cause I was very very pleased when I read the Red Wings have sweeped this series!

[Caps-Rangers] 4-3. Caps lead 3-1. Whew. The Rangers were onto something here. Caps were 3-0 behind after the 2nd period but managed to score three goals in a row to make it 3-3. OT was not enough for either team to clinch the win and the game had to go into second OT where Chimera scored to bring the Caps victory. Phew!

[Pens-Bolts] 3-2. Pens lead 3-1. Another long tough game. Bolts did good coming back from a 2-0 deficit. Took the Pens double OT to wint his one. Still think the Pens will win this round, but not without the Bolts fighting back!

[Flyers-Sabres] 0-1. Tied at 2-2. I hate games that generate only one goal. At least it was not a soft goal. Tough game, pretty much a goalie game too. Suppose we should be glad Boosh was in net. And really? A brawl at the end of the game? Shall watch it when I get home. In any case, not too happy with this result *sigh*

[Ducks-Preds] 6-3. Tied at 2-2. Awww my Ducklings fought back and well, not much else to add than well done Duckies, two more wins to go!

[Red Wings-Yotes] 6-3. Wings sweep this round with a 4-0 win! My fave Western Conference team, looking sharp. Have DVR-ed this one and will watch as soon as I get home!

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 3 & 4 | April 20th, 2011

I was fairly positive that I would wake up to a Nucks win. So seeing them being kicked in the nuts with a 7-2 Hawks win is hardly what I expected or wished for. But at least the Sharks are doing the right thing.

[Nucks-Hawks] 2-7. Wow. That has got to hurt! Really? 2-7? The Nucks better get to form in the next game.
[Sharks-Kings] 6-5. Whoa. Now I do not really care about either team, but the game recap tells me this was a wild game and I will watch the rerun tonight. I am sure that the Kings thought they had the game in their pocket once they got to the 4-0 lead. I doubt the Sharks can repeat such a feat again, so I think they used up their Playoffs luck. Not saying they can't move ahead in the Playoffs, just meaning to say they better not allow such deficits in the games to come ;)

Yesterday after work I watched the Bruins and Wings reruns. And I liked the way that the Bruins played in the first two periods. Thety should keep up that energy for the full 60. And they were a bit lucky that Thomas picked up his game in the third. But a blast to see the Habs lose :D

Should you care to see my Whimsical Playoffs Predictions, you can find those here:

{edit} I just watched the Sharks game and that was a WILD second period, very entertaining!

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 3 | April 19th, 2011

This morning I was driving to work and much of my thoughts had to do with last night's games. Have my Flyers won? Did the Bruins finally beat the Habs? And could the Wings add a third win? And alright, for the sake of my predictions, did the Pens beat the Bolts? Cranking up my laptop is usually a bit of waiting game, but with all these questions in mind it seemed to take forever. I went for a little walk, got a cup of tea before I could finally surf to nhl.com and I have to admit ... seeing all your picks win their game is pretty damned good.

[Flyers-Sabres] 4-2. YEAH! Two more wins to go! I suppose picking Boosh over Sergei at this stage is a wise idea. I am by no means a fan of Boosh, even less so of Leights, but you cannot deny that experience seems to be a bit more important at this stage. And it is a good idea to get the pressure off Sergei, he will grow so much next year and he will have had his first taste of the Playoffs. I see nothing but good happen for him next year. Lets just hope Boosh does not choke. But I suppose he wants to show his best work, after missing out playing last year.

[Bruins-Habs] 4-2. I half-jokingly predicted 6-2 last night. Sort of tried to cheer up a buddy of mine - Sven - who is a Bruins fan. Not holding it against him, especially not when they are facing the Habs ;) Having Chara back probably makes all the difference. Some guys just bring a certain confidence to a team. Alright Bruins, you are back in the game, now net the next three wins!

[Pens-Bolts] 3-2. Well, what can I say. Normally I would have cheered for the Bolts, but for my predictions ... good win. Cheers.

[Red Wings-Yotes] 4-2. Ha, lots of 4-2 wins last night! And way to Wings, my Western Conference faves! One more to go :)

Just two games tonight, but the Nucks can clinch their SF spot tonight. Bye bye Blackhawks!

And as per usual, for my complete predictions, have a look at my previous scribblings:

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 3 | April 18th 2011

Sunday Hockey Night! On ESPN America: Caps vs Rangers and Nucks vs Blackhawks. It was 9.15pm CET, I sat down, started up this post and waited for the puck drop for the Caps game. Would have loved to see the Nucks game as well, but that was a bit too late for me to watch.

In any case, I was ready to watch and scribble down things that excited me during this game. This is what happened next.

*watches and waits*
*watches and waits some more*
*watches and waits even a bit more*
*zzzZzzzZZzzzzzz*
*wakes up in the last few minutes as some PPs generate some interesting moments in front of the Caps goal*

That pretty much sums up the first period for me. I hoped the next one would be better, but ESPN ported the NBC feed so I had to battle through their ignorance first:

Oh intermission idiocy. Honestly, those idiot NBC announcers should be shot. The crap they talk is amazing. No, letting it go, this is not the right post for that particular rant.

The second period started in much the same vein as the first. Annoyingly enough however, the Rangers scored out of the blue. What a damper. That was not the result I was hoping for. I do not like it when the Rangers lead. But at least it seemed to wake the Caps up. With fives minutes to go, the Caps finally managed to build up some pressure. It seemed short-lived, but just when I started to think it would just fizzle out, Ovi scored! A 1-1 before intermission sounded great to me at this time. And then the Rangers just had to go and mess things up again. They literally scored in the last second. Or maybe not? The clock said 0.00 ... So did they score? The War Room was consulted of course and they took their time too. The place was quiet. Everyone was waiting. The ref took his spot and then a bit of nothing lol ... what a great moment for an equipment malfunction! It definitely added to the suspension. He skated to the ref booth and finally we got to hear the decision.

NO GOAL!

That beats hitting the locker room with a 2-1 deficit! Third period started. I was caught up in some reading and only after six minutes into the game did I hear some excitement coming from the crowd and I had to rewind to see what happened. It was a Caps breakout that was thwarted by the Rangers. Ranger Ruslan Fedotenko did a huge belly slide in order to get his stick on the puck. It looked somewhat cool, but to call it 'outstanding defensive play' like the NBC announcers (them again!) did? Just goes to show what morrons they are. Especially so, because in the process Fedotenko nearly scored on his own goalie lol ... hahah ... 'outstanding' ... *shakes head in dismay*

Then after a while the Rangers scored but Knuble equalised the game with five minutes to go. It looked as if this game would go into OT, but then the Rangers scored to make it 3-2. With less than two minutes to go and with just a few lame attempts by the Caps it was too late for the Caps and we could chalk it up as a Caps loss. Not splendid at all. Personally I thought the Caps played a bad game. They took too many penalties and looked shabby and a bit disorganised in general. The Caps still lead the series 2-1, but they need to crank up their game next time!

In related news:
[Nucks-Hawks] 3-2. The Nucks now lead the series by 3-0. Doubtful the Hawks will manage to recover. And that is good news.
[Ducks-Preds] 3-4. Hmm sounds like an interesting game. More eventful than the Caps game. They should have aired this one last night. This series is definitely interesting. I think it might go to the full seven games being played. Still think the Ducks will win it. Or at least should hahah.

Tonight my Flyboys play. I hope that the last game unleashed their inner beast. I want another win and preferably less goals by the Sabres lol ... I would like a 5-2 win ;)

Playoffs Tidbit | Datsyukian Deke

Thanks NHL *highfive* for uploading this vid. This move was so awesome that I want to share it with everyone and keep it archived in my blog for eternal viewing lol

 Datsyukian Deke | Game 2

Click it! If you have seen it you know how awesome it is. If not, prepare yourself for some cool stuff!

Playoffs Daily | QF Game 2 | April 17th, 2011

At last! I got to watch a few games rather than only getting to read about them the next day. Which also gives me much more to write about ;)

I got home just in time to see the Wings score their second goal and even better, I was in time to see Datsyuk perform one of his famous moves.

Luca Caputi said it best per Twitter:
Luca Caputi
Did Datsyuk really just go between his legs full speed on a partial breakaway? #datsyukiandangle

Followed by:
Luca Caputi
He should be suspended for embarassing everyone. Enough is enough! #besthandsever

Funny! But here a play-by-play of my Game Two Playoffs Hockey Night in the Netherlands.
  • Watching the Wings get a 4-0 lead was great; then the game got really exciting! The Yotes fought back to 4-3 and I spent the last two minutes not just on the edge of my seat, I actually moved closer to the TV and sat on the edge my coffee table. Sat so close I could see each and every pixel. Some really frantic play went on ... breaking sticks, crazy skating, stumbles. It was great.
  • Poor Frantzen though, that boarding early on in the game was harsh and when he came back he got a bit of an ovation and rightly so. By the end of the game, all that kept his face together were assorted bandaids. Very zombie-like!
  • Anyways, during this game my blood pressure went up a few points. With an hour or so to go till puck drop, I was worried about my blood pressure during the Flyers game.
*insert an hour of watching the Spanish classic (El Classico) Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona ... oh yeah us Dutch love football ... no, not the American stuff, the European football of course*
  • The Flyers game started well enough. Roo - just like I predicted in my previous post - did score. Unfortunately Harts & Timmo gave us four straight minutes of a Sabres power play early on and sure enough, a rather shabbily organised D gave Vanek a chance to score. Game equalised. Then some further shenanigans - including Sergei being replaced by Boosh - and I just had to shut down the stream for a while. Yeah, ESPN chose to ignore this game so I had to resort to some illegal online watching. It is annoying, but I had to watch this game!
  • Watched a bit more Barcelona instead. Needed to get my blood pressure down so I could pick up watching the Flyers again. Dammit, my teams were in trouble for sure. Barcelona gave up a 1-0 lead and did not recover.
  • Cranked up the feed again and saw Carcillo had just scored. I was happy again. Until the Sabres scored to tie it at 2-2. I needed another timeout.
  • I switched to Flyers Radio. It beat a choppy, laggy feed. Unfortunately I tuned in just in time to find out the Flyers had gone to a 2-3 deficit, but thank god JVR equalised it within a minute. Honestly, at this point I really felt I should stop watching sports altogether and go watch something easy on the heart, maybe a movie. 27 Dresses came to mind.
  • I was now so completely stressed that I needed to relax a bit. I went to read some Damn You Autocorrects :D
  • Second period was as wild as the first. Lots of PPs for Flyers. And wow. I couldn't believe my ears. We finally got a PP goal! 1 out of 15, not bad eh? Definitely a big 'YAY' for Leino (one of my favourite Flyers)!
  • Brière scored to make it 5-3. It became a little easier to breathe!
  • The third period. Right. I have no idea what happened in this period hahah. By this time I was so exhausted that completely against my will I fell asleep on the sofa. I was listening to Flyers Radio and watching the Habs-Bruins game on TV. Maybe that did me in. Also, it was past 1am my time lol ... Anyways, by the time I woke up, the game was over and we had WON! Yeah! 5-4 ... somewhere in the 3rd period some pesky Sabre snuck one in lol

Onto the other games:
[Habs-Bruins] 3-1. Why is this happening? Why is the whole choke-thing true? Damn you Bruins. I want the Habs dispatched with!
[Kings-Sharks] 1-1. The Coins are still on par. But for the sake of my predictions, the Sharks better win the next three hahah.

OK tonight ESPN will air the Caps-Rangers game, so another fun evening ahead!

And as per usual, for my complete predictions, have a look at my previous scribblings:
My Whimsical Playoffs Forecast
